Life Behind The Steering Wheel

I’m sat not moving. I’m sat in the middle of no-where and I’m not going to be moving for ages. For some unknown reason, I actively choose to lose hours of my life, every week, just to sit and do nothing.

To be fair, I’m in my car on the way to work and theirs a traffic jam. It’s not unexpected and it’s not like I haven’t planned for it. It is the same every day and it will never change.

There are hours in my week, where I know I’ll be sat here, doing nothing. Just me behind the steering wheel and the radio letting me know that there’s traffic exactly where I am sat stationary.

Finding Solace

It is a rare treat in my day that I manage to find five minutes to think about anything which isn’t work. Finding that minute of solace in a hectic and managing to appreciate it is almost unheard of in my office.

We all run fast, we sprint from decision to decision, certain that the profit and the bottom line will be hugely negatively affected if we pause to breathe for a second.

I am a fully-grown man. I am a highly functioning, academically successful, fully-grown man. In fact, I am not only fully-grown, but also somehow, I manage to hold down a job as the head of a department of data nerds. You could say that I’m king nerd in our organisation.

I’m forced to lay this down at the outset, because the rest of this post will probably make you think that I’m a child and not a very useful child at that.

It all stems back to a bet I used to have with a childhood friend of mine. We had grown up living across the road from each other, and we had formed our friendship when 50p was a huge amount. So, naturally, our bet stems back to these days. The bet propositions have gotten larger and grown with age, and yet the bet stakes haven’t. We have a rule of the 50p bet. Now don’t think I’m that stupid, our bet uses the very same 50p piece every time. Inevitably, it’s more about the ownership of the coin, than it is about the money.

The Hobby Blog

For something which started as a total hobby, it’s morphed more into more of a life-style and it has been for a long while. I was just playing along sending out my thoughts into the world and hoping someone would be interested enough to come back and see what I had written the next day.
Initially, I started to see my regular visitor numbers spiking and then my unique interactions really took off. I had the basic for doing this seriously and I took it with both hands.  (more…)
